Caretaker Kaname is the main protector of the Four Gods Jewel that was entrusted upon him centuries ago by the residents of ancient Yamataikoku. He has guarded the jewels with his other Youkai friends since they won't be corrupted to use the power of the Four Gods Jewel for themselves unlike humans. Only by defeating him will he allow you access to the Underground Caverns where the real test will come to acquire the Four Gods Jewel.

You first meet Caretaker Kaname in Chinji Cavern during the quest To the Underground Caverns. After talking to him once he will move over to the middle of the "Yamataikoku Underground Cavern". He will stay in that spot until the player starts "Celebrating Future Achievements" where he will then move back to Chinji Cavern.
